*Learning Point: This is the largest that I have gone with the project. From experience on similar projects, I know that it will go larger but you may need to make some adjustments at the corner increases. If it should start pulling or puckering, that means you don't have enough stitches in corner increases so you will need to adjust by adding 2 or 4 stitches to each corner increase. Right now the corner is at 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC. If you wanted the corner larger, you may choose 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC or 4 DC, CH 2, 4 DC. When you get that many stitches in the corner, you may want to do a chain 3 instead of a chain 2. This is how you can adjust any project with 4 sides that is not coming out how you think it should. What worked perfect for the creator of the pattern may not work for you. Two different people, two different crochet styles, tension and techniques. You are making the crochet piece, you can alter the end result to work for you.

Motif - Correct Pronunciation - Mo-TEEF

I make errors and this is one of those times. I let a couple of people know that I was going to try correct my error. As we all know, triangles, squares and circles can create a Motif. Well, I pronounced Motif wrong in several videos. I pronounced Amigurumi wrong earlier in the year, so it is not my first verbal error. Maybe one day Youtube will provide an audio edit so I can replace small segments of audio, while leaving the original video up. I learned a couple days ago that I was pronouncing it wrong all these years. I deeply apologize to those of you who may have learned how to say it wrong because of me. It is pronounced Mo-TEEF. I am working on remembering so the next time I do a Motif tutorial I won't say it wrong.

Join As You Go Motifs

Join as you go crochet is nothing more than a crochet shape that is attached to another shape by aligning it to the previous square. They are just slip stitched together to the stitches on the opposite square. I like to think of it as crocheting a kaleidoscope. Join as you go can be circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, hexagons to name a few. My favorite is working with thread. The motifs can be yarn or thread to create afghans, tablecloths or even sweaters and pullovers. You can create yarn projects out of thread instructions or thread projects out of yarn instructions. I have done both and had great results. My advice is to crochet a shape or two of your project first, to see how they lay together and if you are going to like it, when you are using a medium other than what the pattern recommends.

Click on each square to see a large version.

These are projects that I have created. The image to the right is a project I am currently working on. The images are highlighted with arrows to show where they squares are joined to the other squares. The examples to the left and center illustrate a simple joining through a chain. The right is an illustration of joining through a slip stitch after each double crochet is created. It is joined again at the center.

This is a circle variation of join as you go. There are several size motifs created to get the end result.

Crochet Circle to Square

The idea behind turning a circle in to a square is the same for any size that you want to make. If you want to make it larger, you will make a larger circle to start with and alter the stitches to create a larger square. As you increase the size of your project, you need to remember to add increase stitches to add fullness to the outer edges of your project so it does not pull and pucker from being to tight.

Start with Magic Circle

*NOTE: When your square is complete, make sure you pull your magic circle tight and secure it with a couple of knots. Sew your tails in. The magic circle is crocheting over the yarn so if you don't make secure knots, the tail could come out and your stitches will come apart during the a wash cycle.
